Cover Analysis - The Velvet Underground & Nico


Andy Warhol may have produced the Velvet Underground's debut album in name only, but his print artwork for the sleeve of the original vinyl securing this album a place in music The bright yellow on a plain white background captures the late 60's Art Pop movement as Andy Warhol saw it, using simple, recognisable popular culture imagery for mass production.
The vinyl original had a 'Peel Slowly and see' instruction next to the banana. The skin of the banana could be peeled off to reveal a pink peeled banana underneath adding an extra addition of interactionalism into the final design. The back sleeve of the album originally depicted a live picture of the band with an upside down projection of the the actor Eric Emerson, who subsequently threatened to sue MGM and caused a recall of the original album and them to airbrush him out of all subsequent copy.
